Grasscutter

Grasscutters (Thryonomys swinderianus) are rodents widely found in grasslands, clearings and wet or marshy areas in Africa. They are more commonly known as “hedgehogs” in Central Africa, “Agouti” in French-speaking West Africa, and “Cane rats” in English-speaking West Africa.

Grasscutters produce white meat that is very similar in taste and texture to seafood, depending on the age at which they are slaughtered. They are high in protein yet low in fat. A recent research compared the nutritive value of chicken and beef with that of grasscutter meat. The study indicated quite clearly that grasscutter meat is a much better source of healthy animal protein as it contains far less fat, no chemicals and particularly less cholesterol than other types of meat. The demand for grasscutter meat and other white meat in the local and international markets has been growing steadily whilst latest statistics show that current grasscutter meat production is not even near to meeting the increasing demand in Nigeria. It is actually expected that during the next decade grasscutter meat may gradually replace traditional types of meat. It is currently marketed in a variety of forms including fresh, smoked, grilled, roasted, dried and sun-dried.

When it comes to the combination of great taste and healthy nutrition, grasscutter is truly one of the most superior meat in existence. It may be unusual for some to think about one of the planet’s biggest rodents in this manner but the taste is definitely superior. The meat is even lower in calories and fat than skinless chicken and turkey, while remaining high in protein. It is also the leading recommended source of protein from a wide variety of health organizations. What’s more, due to the grasscutter’s ideal pH balance, the meat does not attract harmful bacteria like E.coli or salmonella.

On our farms, we have perfected the breeding of functionally efficient grasscutters which increase the profitability of commercial flocks. Fertility, outstanding mothering abilities and hardiness are very important in our multiplication objectives therefore our grasscutters are raised on natural grass with sea salt lick supplements. We have an ideal facility, developing hardy and fertile grass-adapted grasscutters bred to perform consistently in your flock.

We do not subscribe to the practice of growth hormone feeding for production of animals which appear aesthetically well-grown and rounded. Holistic and sustainable farming practices form the foundation of all Netforce Farm’s activities and feeding management is key in this approach.
